ABOUT GREG
MEET greg levy
Greg Levy is a community organizer, singer, veteran, mover, husband, father, and a Socialist. Born in the Joy Park housing projects and raised in Akron, Ohio, he was the third of six boys. His father was a union electrician at Ford for 30 years and his mother was a nurse. Growing up, he and his brothers always loved making music. Raised in the church with their father serving as the minister of music, the Levy boys performed frequently throughout their childhood.
These roots in music, combined with a firm sense of justice, led Greg to establish the Paul Robeson Revolutionary Choir. The choir tours church and community venues to spread a message of revolutionary love through music, honoring and keeping Paul Robeson’s legacy alive.
His connection to working-class Akron and the lived experience of struggle led him to join the fight for socialism in Ohio. His story mirrors those of thousands of Ohioans, where the issues facing working-class people are deeply felt, especially during harsh economic times. As a young man, he joined the military, hoping to secure college funding after his service. Like so many working-class young adults, with few opportunities to support himself, he found himself part of the "poverty draft."
His son was born during his military service, and becoming a father profoundly shaped Greg's perspective. The desire to protect his child and ensure his safety fueled Greg's later commitment to fighting police brutality in Ohio, recognizing it as a critical threat to the well-being of his family and his community. He worked hard to give his family a fighting chance at a decent life, including working long hours as a mover—a physically demanding, working-class job he continues to do today. Yet this “American dream” was fraught with a lack of healthcare, housing instability, unreliable transportation, and periods of poverty.
He came to understand that inadequate wages and underemployment are not personal failings, but an integral mechanism of a system that raises profits for a handful of billionaires at the expense of the overwhelming majority. His campaign is about showing there is an alternative to the chaos and instability caused by corporate CEOs and the bought-and-paid-for politicians who stand by as people struggle. Greg's fight is rooted in the care of his class and the desire for a dignified life for all.
